Church Details

Location

The Franciscan Friary and Church are located in central Glasgow, just south of the River Clyde, in the Gorbals. Situated on the corner of Ballater Street and Commercial Road, the car-park and main entrance is in Commercial Road.

Reception

The reception is situated in the large open Atrium. It controls the entrance to the Church and to the Greyfriars Centre. We have people who staff the reception in the Atrium every weekday. This means that the Church remains open all day from about 8.30am each day to 5pm (6pm on Wednesday; 9pm on Tuesday). It also means there is someone to answer the phone, to take messages and to deal with Mass Cards etc. We are grateful to the volunteers who undertake this duty and we are always looking for new 'receptionists' to fill gaps or to do stand-in duty.

The Church is wheelchair accessible and has a Loop system for those with hearing aids. There are Disabled toilets as well as Baby changing facilities.
We have a shop with a wide range of religious artefacts, mass cards etc available for purchase before and after most masses. There is also a tea room area in the adjacent hall across the main atrium for those seeking some refreshment after mass on Sundays.

St Valentines Relics

The remains of the early Martyr, St Valentine came to Glasgow through the good offices of Fr Victorin Cartuyvels ofm, at that time Provincial Minister of the Friars Minor in Belgium. The relics, with all the requisite authentifications, had been in the hands of a wealthy French Catholic family. As the family grew smaller, one of the last survivors began to feel responsibility about them, and spoke to Fr Stephen Potron ofm, Comissary of the Holy Land in France. He, having heard about the new Franciscan Church being built in Scotland in 1868, persuaded Fr Victorin to accept them and give them a more permanent sanctuary. They remained in St Francis, Glasgow for over a hundred years and were transferred to Blessed John Duns Scotus in 1993 and enshrined in the new Greyfriars centre on St Valentine's day, Sunday 14th February 1999.

According to the Church calendar, February 14th is not Valentine's day at all. In fact it is the feast of St Cyril and Methodius, co-patrons of Europe. These two 9th century brothers translated the liturgical books into Slavonic using the Cyrilic alphabet which they invented themselves.
